Perplexity Decisions API alternatives

Looking for alternatives to Perplexity Decisions API? TypeSafe Jev is generally available with the same question types (noul / choice / score), documented pricing, and proof builds. When Perplexity still wins on vision — and where each fits.

Updated 2 Oct 2026 · by Made with Jev

In short

  • Perplexity Decisions: GA, model pplx-decider-v1-27b, 1–128 questions, images via base64, $0.04/M input (output free).
  • Jev: GA, text-only, $0.042/M input (output free), madewithjev proof builds, ~60 questions cost about the same as one.
  • Both handle noul/choice/score question types, batch multiple questions, return probabilities and confidence.
  • Perplexity wins: vision support, slightly lower per-token cost. Jev wins: documented builds, TypeSafe GA path, text-only simplicity.

Who this page is for

You are here because you want to compare Perplexity Decisions to other GA decision APIs, need text-only alternatives at similar pricing, want proof builds with published figures, or are evaluating per-token costs across vendors.

This page covers the documented alternatives. Jev first (most directly comparable GA peer), then when Perplexity still fits, then Cloudflare and OpenAI peers, then self-hosted open-source paths.

Primary alternative: TypeSafe Jev

TypeSafe Jev launched September 15, 2026 as a System One decision model. Same category as Perplexity Decisions: noul, choice and score question types, batch multiple questions in one call, confidence scores and per-option probabilities.

What Jev does that Perplexity docs do not mention

  • Proof builds: madewithjev catalogs real working builds with published cost/latency figures, not vendor claims.
  • Documented API patterns: TypeSafe skill, MCP servers, orchestration rules for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex.
  • Text-only simplicity: no base64 encoding, no image preprocessing if your workflow is already text.

found the perfect use case for @typesafeai Jev: instant compaction in 2026, why is compaction still a summarization prompt? Jev can make it instant by scoring every tool call and dropping what’s irrelevant

I used Jev to classify 1,018 AI research papers. The result: $0.08 total cost and 256ms median end-to-end latency per paper. The pipeline was: 1. Summarize each paper with DeepSeek V4 Flash 2. Send the title + summary + 24 possible topics to Jev 3. Use Jev to classify each paper 4. Visualize everything on http://1kpapers.com The summaries cost $3.99 on @togethercompute. The classifications cost $0.08 on @typesafeai. So for just over $4 of inference, I ended up with a pretty useful way to explore the top AI research papers from the past year. I think this is where things are heading: different models for different parts of the workflow, instead of using one model for everything. I’m running evals on the Jev classifications before replacing the current ones, but the site is already live: http://1kpapers.com

When Perplexity Decisions is still the better fit

Vision support. Perplexity Decisions accepts images via base64 data URLs in state per Perplexity docs. Jev is text-only. If your workflow needs to classify screenshots or UI state without preprocessing, Perplexity handles it.

Slightly lower per-token cost. Perplexity $0.04/M input (output free) vs Jev $0.042/M input (output free). Difference is $0.002/M tokens or ~5%. For text-only high-volume workflows, Perplexity has a marginal edge.

Existing Perplexity integration. If you are already using Perplexity APIs, adding Decisions to the same billing is simpler than wiring a second vendor.

Other decision model peers

Perplexity Decisions is part of a category that emerged in September 2026. Brief notes on peers where docs exist; verify current state before choosing.

Cloudflare Clef

GA at Workers AI. Models @cf/cloudflare/clef and clef-flash, multimodal (text/JSON/images/video), Apache 2.0 open weights, $0.24/M input per Workers AI docs. See Cloudflare Clef alternatives.

OpenAI Decisions API

Announced at DevDay 2026, limited preview on GPT-6 Luna, supports text or images. Schema and Decisions-specific pricing unpublished as of early October 2026. See OpenAI Decisions alternatives.

Open-source path

For local or self-hosted alternatives without vendor billing, see open-source Jev alternatives. Examples: Laya at 421M parameters (86.5 decisions/second, ~9 ms P50 per author), Julia 1 at 144M (runs on CPU), kev, and adapters that constrain next-token logits on models you already serve.

How to decide

  1. Do you need vision (images)? Perplexity documents it via base64 data URLs; Jev is text-only. Preprocess images with OCR or vision models if using Jev.
  2. Do you want proof builds? Jev has madewithjev catalog with published figures. Perplexity: vendor benchmarks only as of early October 2026.
  3. Do you want lowest per-token cost? Perplexity $0.04/M, Jev $0.042/M — difference is ~5%. Both significantly cheaper than chat models for routing/classification.
  4. Are you already using Perplexity APIs? Adding Decisions to existing Perplexity billing is simpler than wiring a second vendor.
  5. Do you need agent orchestration patterns? Jev has documented skill/MCP/orchestration rules for Claude Code, Cursor, Codex.

Common questions

What are alternatives to Perplexity Decisions API?
TypeSafe Jev is the primary GA alternative with same question types (Choice/Score/Noul), documented API, and published pricing ($0.042/M input vs Perplexity $0.04/M). Cloudflare Clef and OpenAI Decisions (limited preview) are peers. For self-hosted: see open-source alternatives (Laya, Julia 1, kev).
Is TypeSafe Jev a Perplexity Decisions alternative?
Yes. Both are GA decision APIs handling noul/choice/score question types. Perplexity supports images via base64 and costs $0.04/M input (output free); Jev is text-only at $0.042/M input (output free). Both batch multiple questions per call.
Why use Jev instead of Perplexity Decisions?
Use Jev when you need madewithjev proof builds with published figures, want slightly lower per-token cost ($0.042/M vs $0.04/M), or prefer TypeSafe's documented API patterns. Use Perplexity when you need vision support (images via base64) or are already using Perplexity APIs.
Does Perplexity Decisions support images?
Yes. Perplexity Decisions accepts images via base64 data URLs in state, per their quickstart docs. Jev is text-only; preprocess images with OCR or vision models if using Jev.
Which is cheaper, Jev or Perplexity Decisions?
Very close: Perplexity $0.04 per million input tokens (output free), Jev $0.042 per million input tokens (output free). Difference is $0.002/M tokens or ~5%. Both significantly cheaper than chat models for routing/classification.
