TypeSafe Jev alternatives

Looking for alternatives to TypeSafe Jev? This is the credibility page — fair to peers and open-source. Cloudflare Clef (multimodal, open weights), Perplexity Decisions (multimodal, $0.04/M), OpenAI Decisions (limited preview), open-source paths (Laya, Julia 1), and when Structured Outputs (chat JSON schema) fits vs when a decision API wins.

Updated 2 Oct 2026 · by Made with Jev

In short

  • Clef: multimodal (text/JSON/images/video), Apache 2.0 open weights, $0.24/M input, self-hostable.
  • Perplexity Decisions: multimodal (images via base64), $0.04/M input (output free), 1–128 questions.
  • OpenAI Decisions: limited preview on GPT-6 Luna, vision support, schema and pricing unpublished as of early October 2026.
  • Open-source: Laya (421M), Julia 1 (144M, CPU), kev, adapters. No vendor billing, runs locally.

Who this page is for

You are here because you need vision support (Jev is text-only), want self-hosted open weights (Jev: closed), prefer vendor diversity, want Cloudflare/Perplexity already in your account, or are comparing pricing across decision APIs.

This page is fair to peers and open-source. No vendor lock-in narrative; honest about Jev's closed weights and text-only limits.

Decision API peers: Clef, Perplexity, OpenAI

Cloudflare Clef

Cloudflare Clef is a System One decision model on Workers AI. Same question types as Jev (Choice/Score/Noul), multimodal (text/JSON/images/video), Apache 2.0 open weights on Hugging Face, up to 64 questions per call.

Pricing: $0.24 per million input tokens per Workers AI docs (as of early October 2026). Higher per-token than Jev ($0.042/M) but includes vision and self-host path.

When to use: need vision, want open weights, already on Cloudflare Workers, or prefer self-hosting over API.

See Cloudflare Clef alternatives and Jev vs Cloudflare Clef.

Perplexity Decisions API

Perplexity Decisions on model pplx-decider-v1-27b. Handles noul/choice/score, 1–128 questions per call, images via base64 data URLs, input under 262k tokens.

Pricing: $0.04 per million input tokens (output free). Slightly lower per-token than Jev ($0.042/M) — difference is ~5%.

When to use: need vision (images via base64), want lowest per-token cost, or already using Perplexity APIs.

See Perplexity Decisions alternatives and Jev vs Perplexity Decisions.

OpenAI Decisions API

Announced at DevDay 2026, limited preview on GPT-6 Luna. Supports text or images, constrained picks from finite options, classify/route/agent next action jobs.

Status: Limited preview as of early October 2026. Schema and Decisions-specific pricing unpublished.

When to use: have preview access, need vision, or prefer OpenAI vendor relationship.

See OpenAI Decisions alternatives and Jev vs OpenAI Decisions.

Open-source and self-hosted alternatives

For local or self-hosted alternatives without vendor billing:

Cloudflare Clef (open weights)

Clef publishes Apache 2.0 weights on Hugging Face. Run anywhere that can serve the model. Workers AI is the hosted path; the weights are the self-hosted path. Same question types as Jev, plus vision.

Laya, Julia 1, kev, adapters

See open-source Jev alternatives for full catalog. Examples:

  • Laya: 421M parameters, 86.5 decisions/second, ~9 ms P50 per author. Trained model answering typed questions.
  • Julia 1: 144.3M parameters, runs on CPU. Small enough for laptop deployment.
  • kev: Decision model trained on Qwen, with published benchmarks.
  • Adapters: Constrain next-token logits on models you already serve. No training, no checkpoint download.

No API call, no token bill, and the decision never leaves the device.

Near-miss: Structured Outputs from chat models

Different category. Structured Outputs (chat with JSON schema) is for occasional structured extracts — parse a receipt, label a screenshot, extract fields from a document.

Decision APIs (Jev/Clef/Perplexity) win on high-frequency classify/route/act:

  • Probabilities and confidence: act on confident answers automatically, escalate uncertain ones.
  • Multi-question batching: 60–128 questions in one call cost about the same as one.
  • Latency: decision models return in 70–500 ms vs chat models at seconds.
  • Cost: decision APIs $0.04–0.042/M input vs chat models at $0.30–3.00/M input.

See Structured Outputs alternatives and Jev vs Structured Outputs.

How to decide

  1. Do you need vision (images/video)? Clef, Perplexity or OpenAI Decisions (preview). Jev is text-only.
  2. Do you need self-hosted open weights? Clef (Apache 2.0 on HF) or open-source alternatives (Laya, Julia 1, kev).
  3. Do you want lowest per-token cost? Perplexity $0.04/M, Jev $0.042/M, Clef $0.24/M (as of early October 2026; verify current pricing).
  4. Do you want proof builds? Jev has madewithjev catalog. Clef/Perplexity: vendor benchmarks only as of early October 2026.
  5. Do you need occasional structured extracts vs high-frequency decisions? Structured Outputs (chat JSON schema) vs decision APIs. See comparison page.

@nutlope

I used Jev to classify 1,018 AI research papers. The result: $0.08 total cost and 256ms median end-to-end latency per paper. The pipeline was: 1. Summarize each paper with DeepSeek V4 Flash 2. Send the title + summary + 24 possible topics to Jev 3. Use Jev to classify each paper 4. Visualize everything on http://1kpapers.com The summaries cost $3.99 on @togethercompute. The classifications cost $0.08 on @typesafeai. So for just over $4 of inference, I ended up with a pretty useful way to explore the top AI research papers from the past year. I think this is where things are heading: different models for different parts of the workflow, instead of using one model for everything. I’m running evals on the Jev classifications before replacing the current ones, but the site is already live: http://1kpapers.com

Common questions

What are alternatives to TypeSafe Jev?
Cloudflare Clef (multimodal, Apache 2.0 weights, $0.24/M), Perplexity Decisions (multimodal, $0.04/M), OpenAI Decisions (limited preview, vision), open-source models (Laya, Julia 1, kev), and Structured Outputs from chat models (different category — occasional extracts, not high-frequency decisions).
Is there an open-source alternative to Jev?
Cloudflare Clef publishes Apache 2.0 weights on Hugging Face. For local alternatives that do not require Cloudflare, see Laya (421M parameters), Julia 1 (144M, runs on CPU), kev, and adapters that constrain next-token logits on models you already serve.
Why look for alternatives to Jev?
Common reasons: need vision support (images/video), want self-hosted open weights, prefer vendor diversity, want Cloudflare/Perplexity already in account, or need slightly lower per-token cost. This page is fair to peers and open-source.
Should I use Structured Outputs instead of Jev?
Different category. Structured Outputs (chat with JSON schema) works for occasional structured extracts. Decision APIs (Jev/Clef/Perplexity) win on high-frequency classify/route/act: probabilities, confidence, multi-question batching, lower latency/cost. See comparison page.
Which alternative has vision support?
Cloudflare Clef (text/JSON/images/video), Perplexity Decisions (images via base64), OpenAI Decisions (text or images, limited preview). Jev is text-only; preprocess images with OCR or vision models.
